Q: When you look at the low post player you may need, is it low post scoring or rebounding more essential for your team going forward?
BC: Scoring really hasn't been a problem for us. You know, with Andrea, he's probably miscast as a 5, Andrea Bargnani, but he's playing 5 out of necessity, we don't have that player. I think it's more about defending the rim, rebounding the basketball, doing some of those things that a low post presence might have, and also, Andrea's lifted quite often. It would be great if you could find the perfect combination of a player that would have that low post presence on offense as well, to be a threat to throw the ball in to, and target down there. And you know, those things come along some times with the bigs, you know they're not always ready-made, it takes the young bigs a little bit longer to come around, you know Andrea's gotten better in the post, but it's really about having some tenacity on the defensive side of the ball.
Q: You envision Bargnani ultimately as a stretch 4 with his skillset, that he can be a great perimeter player?
BC:
He really is probably best-suited to play the 4 position, but again, I've always tried to build teams on versatility, no matter what position. I love guards that can play two positions, you know we've got Barbosa, Jerryd Bayless--two guards that can go out there and score the ball, but also handle the ball and control the offense, or set up the offense. Power forwards, you know can go 4/3 or 4/5.
In the case of Bargnani he's the 4/5, and in the case of Kleiza he's a 4/3. I've got a guy in James Johnson that can play multiple positions. I know he can guard multiple positions because he's quick, he's athletic, he's strong. So, you know, versatility is key in this business,
I don't necessarily like to pigeon-hole guys into positions, so if I could just find a complimentary piece to a guy like Andrea Bargnani, that's the most important thing with respect to his future. Because he's proven to be a 20+ point scorer a night in this league, they don't come by often, you gotta nurture them and give them the right support around them to take advantage of their strengths.
