..."It's amazing. That guy, when we got him, couldn't guard me," Warriors coach Don Nelson said Friday. "And he's really worked hard on his defense. You've got to give him a lot of credit."
...After working extensively with the Warriors' assistant coaches, Belinelli improved his footwork and started to become a more physical defender. Instead of shying away from contact, Belinelli now has a knack for planting himself in the path of the player he's trying to guard.
"Fundamentally, I try to be more aggressive," Belinelli said. "When I go into the game, I want to be tough because sometimes I take (the other team's) best offensive player. So I want to be ready to play good defense. And after that, I think about my offense."
Belinelli was guarding the likes of Boston's Ray Allen, Indiana's Danny Granger and the Lakers' Kobe Bryant before a right ankle injury in the second week of January kept him out of 15 straight games. At that time, Belinelli was playing right around 30 minutes a game and scoring in double figures more often than not.
Now that Belinelli's back, the Warriors have seven guards available. Monta Ellis and Jamal Crawford figure to get the lion's share of minutes, but considering his size (6-foot-5), shooting ability (.445 field goal percentage) and improved defense, Belinelli probably won't get lost in the shuffle.
"He's not afraid to get in there and get physical and use his body," Nelson said. "That will separate him from a lot of guys in the league if he can shoot like he can, make plays and guard, because he's got good size."
